On Wednesday evening, Driffield Junior School travelled to South Hunsley School for the East Riding Schools Football Finals after successfully winning their local cluster tournament last week.
The best 14 schools in the East Riding were split into 3 groups. The winner of each group and best loser progressing to the semi finals and then final.
Driffield were drawn in what appeared the strongest group. In their first game, they played some cautious football, feeling their way in a 0-0 draw against Boothferry Primary School. Wilberfoss Primary School (and our old Headteacher, Mr Henderson) were our next opponents. Again, a close game ended in another 0-0 draw. Goals were hard to come by. In their next game, Driffield took an early lead against Kirk Ella St Andrews, only to concede with seconds to go and a third draw, the score finishing 1-1. In their final group game, Driffield played Hook Primary School, who had won all three of their games so far. However, Driffield were now on a roll and scored late on to finish victorious in their final game and finish runners up in their group.
Making their way to the results table, a surprised manager and boys heard, "Hook Primary School will play Driffield Junior School in the second semi final!"
A hurried team talk, and the boys were playing Hook again after just beating them in their final group fixture. Again, another close game ended when Hook conceded a penalty and Freddie Walker, with the help of the post, got the ball over the line and Driffield into the Final!
In the Final, Driffield played a very strong Westfield Primary School, whose team contained some Hull academy players. Driffield were put under constant pressure throughout but then nearly scored on the break. However, a goal near the end ended Driffield's successful evening - the boys finishing East Riding Schools Football U11 Runners Up.
Many thanks to all the parents and grandparents for their support on what was a cold evening.
Driffield now progress to the Humberside Schools U11 Finals on Wednesday 16th November - again at South Hunsley School. Hopefully we can find a full kit that matches for the county final!
